Poetry Assignment: Writing Your Own Acrostic Poem
Summary of Activity: Students will write their own acrostic poem using the word "ROCKET." The students will write the word vertically on a sheet of paper. Then they will brainstorm different words or phrases that describe Rocket using the letters in the word "ROCKET." Finally they will fill in each line to create their acrostic poem.
Rationale: Poetry brings sound and sense together in words and line. The key to successful poetry is poetic formulas, which serve as scaffolds, or temporary writing frameworks, so that students focus on ideas rather than on the mechanics of writing poems. I specifically chose the students to do an acrostic poem because it is a fun, simple way to write poetry.
Common Core Standards:
Level of Bloom's Taxonomy: This poetry assignment addresses the synthesis level of Bloom's Taxonomy. Synthesis is the ability to originate, combine, and integrate parts of prior knowledge into a product, plan, or proposal that is new. Students are taking their prior knowledge of the book, and creating an acrostic poem about Rocket. Learning outcomes at this level stress creative behaviors, with an emphasis on the formulation of new patterns or structures. Students are required to think creatively to brainstorm different words and phrases that describe Rocket in order to create the poem.
